How Mars manages PPA Guarantees of Origin with Soldera
Soldera handles Mars’ European Guarantees of Origin (GO) end to end, with 600+ GWh a year warehoused and cancelled through one platform. The first batch, 100+ GWh cancelled for 27 target markets, was completed within one week of receipt.
The Challenge
Mars is a global family-owned company, with operations in snacking, food and pet care. It is a renewable electricity leader through its Renewable Acceleration Program which is an innovative strategy option that extends renewables procurement beyond its own sites deep into its value chain. This directly supports the development and expansion of renewable generation and is faster and more efficient than working with many supply chain partners to individually source small amounts of renewables. This is tripling Mars usage of renewable electricity and supports renewable energy construction through long-term PPAs, with the resulting GOs from those PPAs having to be cancelled on behalf of its supply chain partners.
At the start of 2026, following the completion of a large wind PPA and in advance of its reporting deadline, Mars needed 100+ GWh of GOs cancelled for their beneficiaries across 27 European markets. Each registry has its own process and its own potential delays. PPAs keep producing GOs throughout the year, so Mars also needed a process it could repeat, run by a partner who could onboard quickly and start immediately.
The Solution
Soldera onboarded Mars and began work within days. Three things made that possible:
- Hosted accounts. Soldera holds registry accounts in most European countries, so certificates come in directly from the source, with no import/export fees or transfer delays.
- One provider for all markets. Every target market is handled through a single partner.
- Automated workflows. Transfers, monitoring and cancellations run automatically. The platform collects and stores the cancellation documentation, which is searchable and downloadable at any time and ready for third-party review.
Ongoing service
Mars' annual GO volumes now run on Soldera's infrastructure. 600+ GWh of GOs are warehoused on the platform and cancelled automatically for Mars' target markets. Cancellation runs twice a year to avoid certificate expiration.
Mars can follow each certificate from incoming PPA volume to final cancellation and decide how certificates are allocated across markets. The structure also takes in multiple PPA contracts, so new volumes can be added without rebuilding the process.
